Mission

Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound was established on 31 May 2005, combining the existing Group/Marine Safety Office Long Island Sound in New Haven, with Group Moriches on Long Island’s Atlantic shore. The Sector provides “One Stop Shopping” for both our external customers, stakeholders, and for our own Coast Guard family. We integrate traditional Coast Guard missions into a single command focused on two major operational processes: Prevention and Response, in support of the Coast Guard’s fundamental roles: Maritime Safety & Security, Mobility, Protection of Natural Resources, & National Defense.

Sector Long Island Sound is responsible for the entire spectrum of Coast Guard operational missions which include search and rescue, law enforcement, domestic ice breaking, maintenance of aids to navigation, port safety and security, marine environmental protection, waterways management, marine inspection, and casualty investigation. Commander, Sector LIS is also the Captain of the Port, Officer in Charge Marine Inspection, Federal Maritime Security Coordinator, SAR Mission Coordinator, and Federal On-Scene Coordinator. Sector Long Island Sound area of responsibility (AOR) covers Long Island Sound from the New York - Connecticut border to the Connecticut - Rhode Island border at Watch Hill, RI.

Sector Long Island Sound is comprised of the Sector Command staff, Sector Field Office Moriches, 13 sub-units, Marine Safety Detachment Coram and 7 Auxiliary Divisions. Total personnel include over 500 Active Duty, 200 Reserve, 16 Civilians, and over 1300 Auxiliary members.

The Long Island Sound area of responsibility is bounded by the New York/Connecticut border at Port Chester, NY to the Connecticut/Rhode Island border at Watch Hill & the northern coastline of Long Island (from Matinecock Point east to Orient Point, east across the “Race” to Plum Island), extending out to sea 200 nautical miles. It includes three coastlines - Connecticut plus north & south shores of Long Island. The AOR encompasses 23,600 square miles with 450 miles of coast line. Two geographically separated ‘business centers’ with two-thirds of marine distress cases off the south shore of Long Island facing the Atlantic, and roughly two-thirds of marine safety & security issues centered in Long Island Sound, with three key deepwater ports in CT (New London, New Haven & Bridgeport) & an offshore Long Island petroleum loading platform at Riverhead, NY. Over 5 million barrels of oil is stored/handled in New Haven. New London is a national security port with a U.S. Navy submarine base and submarine construction at the Electric Boat shipyard.
