Welcome to the Eighth Coast Guard District

The Eighth Coast Guard District, headquartered in New Orleans, covers all or part of 26 states throughout the Gulf Coast and heartland of America. It stretches from the Appalachian Mountains and Chattahoochee River in the east, to the Rocky Mountains in the west, and from the border between the U.S. and Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian border in North Dakota. Part of the Department of Homeland Security, the men and women of the Eighth District are vital in protecting the 900 miles of coastline and 10,300 miles of inland navigable waterways located in their area of responsibility.

The Coast Guard suspended the search today at 1:15 p.m., for 53-year-old Kevin Ferrell, a fisherman who was reported missing Saturday by a good Samaritan who found his empty boat in Copano Bay, near Rockport, Texas. Searches were conducted by crews aboard TPWD boats, Sea Tow boats, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi/Air Station MH-65 Dolphin helicopters, an HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane and Station Port Aransas small boat crews. Search efforts covered more than 240 square miles. Our thoughts and prayers go out the the family of Kevin Ferrell. #UPDATE The Coast Guard continues to search for a Kevin Ferrel, a boater who was reported missing by a good samaritan in Copano Bay. Throughout the day search efforts were conducted by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department boat crews, Sea Tow boat crews, An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi and small boat crews from Coast Guard Station Port Aransas. Members from the Coast Guard Gulf Strike Team, Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Paducah, and Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Huntington participated in sandbag operations in the St. Mary's Missouri and Kaskaskia Island areas. The crews were divided into punt teams assisting with the flood operations effort making over 1,500 sandbags, Saturday. #GoCoastGuard #flood

The Coast Guard and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department crews are searching for a missing boater in Copano Bay, near Corpus Christi, and Coast Guard crews will be conducting searches throughout the night. A good Samaritan located the man's boat with his phone in it and notified the Coast Guard Saturday afternoon. #USCG #SAR #breaking
