Captain Janet D. Espino-Young
 

Captain Espino-Young enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1995. Following graduation from Cape May, she was assigned to Support Center New York on Governors Island.  After the closure of Governors Island, she was transferred to Coast Guard Station Chincoteague, Virginia, serving as a duty boat crew member and radio watchstander. 

She attended Officer Candidate School in Yorktown, Virginia. Throughout her career, she oversaw the full range of Coast Guard maritime safety and security missions in Miami, Morgan City, San Juan and the Seventh Coast Guard District. She served as pollution responder, federal on scene coordinator’s representative, facility inspector, container inspector, contingency planner, investigating officer, marine inspector, senior investigating officer, chief of inspection and prevention department head.  

She has been involved in significant events from Deepwater Horizon, 9 hurricane responses, overseas marine casualty investigations, cruise ship fires, mass rescue operations, large-scale salvage and pollution incidents and COVID-19 response efforts. She served as the Coast Guard’s representative for the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Port State Control matters for the Caribbean region. She assisted the International Port Security liaison conducting foreign port security assessments in South America and the Caribbean region.

Her personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Coast Guard Commendation Medal and Coast Guard Achievement Medal and numerous unit awards.

Captain Janet Espino-Young was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and grew up in Miami, Florida. She graduated from Salisbury University in Maryland in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  She is married to Brian Young and has two sons Zachary, 29, and Luke, 28.
