Captain Gregory J. Sanial assumed duties as the Chief of Staff for the Fifth Coast Guard District in June 2016.  The Fifth District conducts the full range of Coast Guard maritime safety and security missions throughout the Mid-Atlantic region from central New Jersey through North Carolina covering 1.4 million square miles of ocean, bays, rivers, several major Mid-Atlantic ports, the largest naval base in the world, and our Nation's Capital.  Previously he served as the Chief, Office of Budget and Programs. In this capacity he served as the Coast Guard's Executive Budget Director preparing and defending the service's annual $11 Billion budget across multiple appropriations. He is a Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM). 

Captain Sanial is a career cutterman with 12 years of sea duty and has commanded five different Coast Guard cutters. His afloat assignments include Commanding Officer of USCGC Sherman (WHEC 720) homeported in San Diego, California; Commanding Officer of USCGC Chase (WHEC 718) homeported in San Diego, California; Commanding Officer of USCGC Forward (WMEC 911) homeported in Portsmouth, Virginia; Executive Officer of USCGC Dependable (WMEC 626) homeported in Cape May, New Jersey; Commanding Officer of USCGC Attu (WPB 1317) homeported in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Commanding Officer of USCGC Point Whitehorn (WPB 82364 homeported in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands; and Deck Watch Officer on USCGC Confidence (WMEC 619) homeported in Port Canaveral, Florida. Additionally, he served afloat on USCGC Eagle (WIX 327) as Deck Watch Officer for several summers to assist with Cadet and Officer Candidate Training.

Captain Sanial's assignments ashore include Seventeenth District Chief of Response and Chief of Law Enforcement in Juneau, Alaska; Deputy Office Chief in the Office of Planning and Performance (CG-81) on the staff of the Coast Guard's Chief Financial Officer Afloat and CWO (BOSN) Operations Assignment Officer at the Coast Guard Personnel Command; Allotment Fund Code Manager in the Office of Systems Funds Management (COMDT (G-SRM)); and the Aide to the Seventh District Commander in Miami, Florida.

Captain Sanial holds a PhD and was awarded three other master's degrees. He was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Organizational Leadership from NorthCentral University in May 2013. He was also awarded a Master's of Science in Management from the Sloan School of Management from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute Of Technology in 2007 where he was a Sloan Fellow in Innovation and Global Leadership. In addition, he was awarded a Master's Degree in Business Administration with a dual emphasis in Finance and Operations Management from the Smeal College of Business Administration at Pennsylvania State University in 1997 and a Master of Arts Degree with Distinction in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, in 2002. Captain Sanial graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree with high honors in Marine Engineering.

Captain Sanial's military decorations include the Legion of Merit, seven Meritorious Service Medals with operational distinguishing devices, four Coast Guard Commendation Medals with operational distinguishing devices, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, The Coast Guard Achievement Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Arctic Service Medal.
