COMMAND MASTER CHIEF


CMC SMITHMaster Chief Petty Officer Sean Smith

Master Chief Sean Smith assumed the duties of Sector Maryland - National Capital Region’s Command Master Chief in June of 2023. Serving as the Senior Enlisted Leader in the Maryland - National Capital region for Coast Guard operations, he is responsible for total oversight of workforce concerns and personnel development.

Master Chief Smith’s most recent assignment he served as Battalion Commander after fleeting up from Assistant Battalion Commander at Training Center Cape May. As the senior Company Commander, Master Chief Smith led a highly trained group of professionals that transformed civilians into military members of the U. S. Coast Guard. Prior to that Master Chief Smith was a Company Chief at the Coast Guard Academy where he mentored, taught, coached, and trained the thousand plus members serving as the Corps of Cadets. His previous units include Engineer Petty Officer onboard CGC PIKE in San Francisco, California; CGC WILLOW in Newport, Rhode Island; CGC ADAK in Patrol Forces Southwest Asia, Kingdom of Bahrain; Sector Baltimore, Maryland, Engineering; CGC HARRIET LANE in Portsmouth, Virginia; Electrician’s Mate “A” school in Yorktown, Virginia; and Group Portland in South Portland, Maine. 

Master Chief Smith’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, three Coast Guard Commendation Medals, four Coast Guard Achievement Medals, and two Commandant’s Letters of Commendation. In addition to various other personal and unit level awards, he earned the Permanent Cutterman and Company Commander insignias. 

Master Chief Smith is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Management with a concentration in Leadership through American Military University. He is a graduate of the Chief Petty Officer Academy Class 225, and Senior Enlisted Leadership Course 074. He is also a graduate of U. S. Military Academy and Columbia University Benavidez Leadership Development Program, Cohort 4. 

Master Chief Smith is a native of Crownsville, Maryland, and enlisted in the Coast Guard in August of 2002. Master Chief Smith spends his free time with his wife, Sarah, and two elementary aged daughters enjoying all things outdoors.
