Mission

U.S. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans supports a wide range of Coast Guard operations to include search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, marine environmental protection, aids to navigation, and ports, waterways, and coastal security.

Area of Responsibility

Sector New Orleans Marine Inspection Zone and Captain of the Port Zone encompasses the Lower Mississippi River (Sea Buoy-303), Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (MM44.2 EHL - 20 WHL), Inner Harbor Navigational Canal, Port Allen Route (MM0-64.1), Atchafalaya River (MM0-45 and shared jurisdiction with MSU Morgan City MM45.5-49.5), Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MM10-66), and Tiger Pass. In an Average Year...

  • Responds to over 400 search and rescue cases;
  • Releases over 900 Broadcast Notice to Mariners;
  • Initiates over 2,000 marine safety cases;
  • Investigates nearly 1,200 reports of oil and hazardous material releases;
  • Responds to and investigates over 1,000 commercial marine casualties;
  • Conducts over 1,200 domestic vessel inspections;
  • Conducts over 1,000 foreign vessel safety and security examinations of the nearly 5,500 vessel arrivals;
  • Maintains over 200 facility safety and security plans and conducts over 1800 facility inspections;
  • Conducts inspections on over 400 intermodal containers;
  • Conducts over 470 commercial fishing vessel exams and over 700 towing vessel exams;
  • Services over 1000 buoys and fixed aids to navigation.
