D9 PHOTO COLLAGE The U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes is responsible for all Coast Guard operations throughout the five Great Lakes, the Saint Lawrence Seaway and parts of the surrounding states including 6,700 miles of shoreline and 1,500 miles of the international border with Canada. The 6,000 active duty, reserve, civilian and auxiliary men and women who make up the U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes deliver multi-mission services in search and rescue, maritime safety and security, environmental protection, maritime law enforcement, aids to navigation and icebreaking.

The man suffered injuries to his right hand and leg and was taken by EMS to Trinity Health in Grand Haven. Turk has been in the Coast Guard for less than a year.

Seaman Joseph Turk, a CGC Katmai Bay crew member, immediately jumped in the water to assist, keeping the man afloat by treading water for 20+ minutes while crews worked to lower rescue appropriate equipment
