Cmdr. Paul S. McConnell
Commander Paul McConnell is the 28th Commanding Officer of USCGC DAUNTLESS (WMEC 624) homeported out of Pensacola, Fla. He has held a variety of sea-going command and staff positions throughout his career, including 12 years on five Coast Guard Cutters.
Commander McConnell earned his commission in 1998 upon graduation from Coast Guard Direct Commission Officer School in Yorktown, Va. Commander McConnell’s first tour was as a duty civil engineer at Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown, VA. His first afloat tour was as an Engineering Officer in Training aboard USCGC MIDGETT (WHEC 726). In 2001, he transferred to Weapons Officer aboard the USCGC MIDGETT. From 2003 to 2006, Commander McConnell served as a Counter Drug, Migrant Interdiction, and General Law Enforcement Operations Analyst for USCG Pacific Area Operations Oversight Division. In 2006, he served as the Operations Officer of USCGC RUSH (WHEC 723) homeported in Honolulu. In 2008, he reported as the Coast Guard Liaison Officer to the U.S. Navy Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and was a Training Liaison Officer for 10 Coast Guard cutters. From 2011-2013, he was the Executive Officer, second in command, of USCGC VIGOROUS (WMEC 627) homeported in Cape May, N.J. From 2015-2017, he served as the Assistant Chief of the Operations Analysis Division (LANT-7) for USCG Atlantic Area. Commander McConnell has previously served as the Executive Officer, second in command, of USCGC JOHN MIDGETT (WHEC 726) homeported in Seattle.
Commander McConnell holds a Master of Science in Operations Research from George Mason University and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from California State University Fresno.
Commander McConnell’s military decorations include the: Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medal, Coast Guard Commendation Medal with operational “O” device (four awards), Navy Commendation Medal, Coast Guard Achievement Medal (two awards), and various other personal and unit awards.
