Marine Safety Unit Toledo History

Marine Safety Unit (MSU) Toledo was originally established in 1900 as U.S. Steamboat Inspection Service Local Inspection District Toledo. In 1938, the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation Office Toledo was established and in 1948 the unit was designated as Marine Inspection Office (MIO) Toledo. In 1975, the unit was re-designated as Marine Safety Office (MSO) Toledo. The Commandant approved the current establishment of MSU Toledo on July 25, 2005 as part of the Sector Command Initiative. MSU Toledo is a subordinate unit of Sector Detroit. In 2008, supervision of the Regional Exam Center was transitioned from the MSU to the National Maritime Center. The unit was originally located at the Federal Building, but was moved to our current location, the Ohio Building, in 2000.
