Welcome to Sector Maryland-National Capital Region!

Headquartered at Curtis Bay in Baltimore, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Maryland–National Capital Region (MD-NCR) is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and environmental stewardship of the ports and waterways across Maryland, the District of Columbia, and portions of the upper Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River. Established in 2005 as part of the Coast Guard’s nationwide modernization initiative, the Sector unified multiple legacy commands—bringing together marine safety, port security, environmental protection, and search and rescue missions under a single leadership structure. In 2016, it was renamed to reflect its growing operational role in protecting the nation’s capital region and surrounding maritime infrastructure.
Sector Maryland–NCR serves as the region’s Captain of the Port, Federal On-Scene Coordinator, and Officer in Charge, Marine Inspection, coordinating daily operations with federal, state, and local partners to safeguard commerce, respond to incidents, and support national security objectives. While co-located with the U.S. Coast Guard Yard—the service’s only shipbuilding and major repair facility—the Sector operates independently, focusing on front-line mission execution and the protection of people, property, and the marine environment throughout its area of responsibility.
