Commander Donald M. Terkanian, Jr. has commanded USCGC BEAR since June 2018.
He has served previous afloat tours as Deck Watch Officer aboard USCGC CAMPBELL (WMEC 909), as Executive Officer aboard USCGC SENECA (WMEC 906), and as Commanding Officer of USCGC MANOWAR (WPB 87330) in Galveston, Texas, Commanding Officer of USCGC AQUIDNECK (WPB 1309) in the Arabian Gulf, and Commanding Officer of USCGC JEFFERSON ISLAND (WPB 1340) in Portland, Maine. Ashore, he served as Search and Rescue Controller and Command Duty Officer for the First Coast Guard District in Boston, Massachusetts, and was the final Commanding Officer of Training Team East in Portsmouth, Virginia. He most recently served as Deputy Chief, Atlantic Area Cutter Forces Section. Commander Terkanian earned his commission from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 2000.
Personal awards include two Meritorious Service Medals with Operational Distinguishing Device, three CG Commendation Medals with Operational Distinguishing Device, the 911 Transportation Medal, three CG Achievement Medals with Operational Distinguishing Device, and the Iraq Campaign Medal. Commander Terkanian earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Government from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
Commander Terkanian is a native of Stonington, Connecticut. He is married to the former Amanda Reese of New Orleans, Louisiana, and they have three children, Donald, William, and Samantha.
