Welcome to Sector Northern Great Lakes. During your stay, you'll have immense opportunities to further your educational endeavors. Here, the Coast Guard shares a Memorandum of Understanding with the local university, Lake Superior State University (LSSU), which lowers the rate of tuition to $250 per credit for active duty, reservists, and spouses and dependents. LSSU, located on a hill overlooking the U.S. and Canadian border, offers a host of options for certificates, Associates, and Bachelor's degrees.
Furthermore, if attending LSSU, you'll have the opportunity to apply to the Amy Ignatowski Award, available for CG members and their immediate family. This generous award offers up to $500 to assist with educational expenses.
If you're thinking of a trade school, located on the beautiful shore of Lake Huron in Cedarville, is the Great Lakes Boat Building School (GLBBS). At the GLBBS, they offer 12 month programs in Marine Service Technology and Comprehensive Career Boat Building.
Tuition Assistance (TA) is offered to active duty and reservists through the Coast Guard. Fiscal Year 24's TA offers up $250 per credit (annual cap of $4,500) to assist you with the cost of your continued education.
If college life is not for you, there is the Coast Guard's Credentialing Opportunities On-Line (CG COOL) reimbursement program. The FY24 program offers Credentialing Assistance (CA) of up to $4,500 to use on credentials featured on the CG COOL website.
In order to apply for CA or TA, you'll be able to make your request through Navy Knowledge Online.
For additional assistance, eligible CG members, spouses, and dependents can make use of Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA) educational loans and grants. For applications and more information, contact Sector Sault's Admin staff to speak with a CGMA representative.
Due to the constantly changing benefits of the GI Bill, information will not be posted here. Should you have any questions or concerns about the process, please contact me or a VA benefits specialist at (888) 442-4551 or visit www.gibill.va.gov.
