Commander Kallgren assumed duties as Senior Reserve Officer, Sector Virginia in October, 2017, after serving three years as the District Five Coast Guard Liaison to FEMA Region III, Philadelphia, PA.
Commander Kallgren began her military career as a maritime cadet at Texas A&M University, Galveston in 1990 earning her commission in the Merchant Marine Reserve / Naval Reserve and a Coast Guard Third Mate Unlimited license upon graduation in 1993. Commander Kallgren served in a variety of roles in the Merchant Marine with the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command and other small boat operators.
In 1996 she accepted a direct commission in the United States Coast Guard as a Maritime Academy Graduate. She trained at Marine Safety Office Hampton Roads earning qualifications as a double ended senior marine inspector and is a fully qualified marine investigating officer. She earned the right to permanently wear the Marine Safety Insignia upon completion of this tour in 2000.
In 2001 as an instructor at Training Center Yorktown in the Marine Inspections and Investigations School, Commander Kallgren chose to leave active duty under the two year temporary separation policy to care for her newborn daughter. During this separation she affiliated with the Coast Guard Reserve and was assigned to Marine Safety Office/Sector Hampton Roads in a variety of supervisory roles in the Prevention and Response Departments.
Commander Kallgren serves as an adjunct ICS-300 instructor and holds Type 3 certifications as Liaison Officer and Planning Section Chief. Her officer specialty codes include Incident Management and Marine Investigations. She is completing a Masters in Public Administration at Old Dominion University with a graduation date of August 2018. Commander Kallgren is a Coast Guard civilian employee with the Director of Operational Logistics in Norfolk, VA. She lives in Virginia Beach, VA with her husband Andy and two children.
